We all know that engagement is not only about the “stuff” (decorations, props, etc.) but more about the content you are teaching. HOWEVER, we know that these transformations are crucial in engaging your learners! Here I will be discussing that “stuff” and how to maintain and organize your engagement items.
As a teacher trying to be the next Hope King, setting up room transformations can be #1 expensive and #2 messy/disorganized.
How can you afford all of this crazy stuff? What do I do with all of this when I am done? How do I stay organized? Here are a few things I have learned along the way.
First of all, I have realized quickly that it will take years to accumulate ALL of the things I am desperately wanting for room transformations. It is easy to feel the pressure of an “instagram” worthy lesson, but starting small is the way to go. I have begun purchasing a little bit each year and adding little by little to my transformation boxes. I keep EVERYTHING, table clothes, napkins, extra copies, anything left over from the lesson goes in the box!
My second tip: Do not throw your new lesson items in a random spot. The first year I attempted room transformations or more engaging lessons I would just throw things in a box and stick it in a cabinet at random. This makes it so hard to remember what you’ve bought and where you’ve put it.
